Welcome to our new blog on the research activities of the music subject area at the University of Glasgow!  This blog is intended to provide you with insights and perspectives into the subject area’s research environment. It will be updated every couple of weeks, and research staff and students in the subject area will contribute posts about current or forthcoming research projects, their public engagement and knowledge exchange activities, their creative practice and other aspects of conducting research in the field of music.

The music subject area consists of thirteen scholars and practitioners with particular strengths in the areas of popular music studies, historical and cultural musicology, performance and performance studies, composition, and sonic arts and music technology. More specifically, some of our  fields of expertise include modernism and modernity, historiography, jazz, Scottish music and musicians, music and politics, improvisation and music and the moving image, among others.  We also have a thriving community of about 25 research students working towards PhD and MMus degrees, and our postgraduate taught degrees (MMus in Historically Informed Performance Practice, MMus in Sonic Arts, MLitt in Popular Music, plus a range of postgraduate diplomas and certificates) include a substantial research component too. The subject area also hosts a number of projects and networks which reflect some of our research interests, and benefits from being part of the School of Culture and Creative Arts.
